LOWELL – A 2-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday evening after she was struck by a truck outside a daycare on Coburn Street in Lowell.

Witnesses said the child’s mother tried to get the toddler into her car, but the 2-year-old ran into the street behind the car just as a truck drove by, hitting her.

Child seriously injured

Police say when officers responded around 4 p.m., they found a 2-year-old girl in the street with serious injuries. The child was transported to a Boston-area hospital for treatment of injuries that appeared to be life-threatening.

The horror unfolded right before the eyes of Enid Rios and her husband. Rios comforted the girl’s mother as her husband ran to flag down the driver.

They say the driver didn’t realize what was happening, but then stopped and stayed at the scene. According to police, the driver is cooperating.

“She was screaming, ‘my baby, my baby, please don’t take my baby,’” Rios said. “She’s in my prayers and may God help that little child, an innocent baby, they don’t know. She was running, she was playing and unfortunately a car passed by.”

Good Samaritans tried to help before first responders arrived and rushed the toddler to the hospital.

The community is shocked by the accident and is now uniting in prayer for the family.

The crash is being investigated by the Lowell Police Department Accident Reconstruction Unit.
