22-year-old woman dies in hospital after overnight crash, South Carolina coroner says

A South Carolina woman was killed in an early morning crash on Saturday, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

Meagan Hudson, a 22-year-old Sumter County resident, died in what coroner Robbie Baker called an accident.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Pinewood and Wedgefield roads in Sumter, Baker said in a news release. No further information about the wreck was available.

Hudson was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, where she died from injuries sustained in the crash, the news release said.

No other injuries were reported.

It did not say whether Hudson was the driver or a passenger in the vehicle. Information about seat belt use was not available.

Both the coroner’s office and Sumter police continue to investigate the collision. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.

At least 817 people had died on South Carolina roadways through Nov. 3, 2024, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in accidents in South Carolina, DPS reported.
