Man dies after collapse at City of Lakes Half Marathon

MINNEAPOLIS — A 27-year-old man has died after fainting during the City of Lakes Half Marathon in Minneapolis on Sunday.

According to Minneapolis Park police, the man fell asleep along Bde Maka Ska Parkway and emergency responders rushed to his aid.

He was taken to Abbott Northwestern Hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead, according to this statement posted on Facebook by the race organizers, Run Minnesota:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a participant following the 2024 City of Lakes Half Marathon.

On a day meant to celebrate, a family lost a loved one. Our thoughts go out to the runner’s family and all who loved them.

Run Minnesota and the City of Lakes Half would like to extend our sincere thanks to the course participants who came to the aid of a fellow runner, and to the first responders and medical professionals who provided medical care.

We also extend our support to the running community as we grieve this loss together.”

Neither police nor race officials have identified the victim. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine his exact cause of death.
