A soldier was killed in a ‘non-operational incident’, the Ministry of Defense confirms.
Cpl Christopher Gill, of the 4th Battalion, The Ranger Regiment, died in Brecon, Powys on October 16.
Known as “Gilly”, he is described as a “notable Army Special Operations soldier”.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time,” the Ministry of Defense said.
The Defense Ministry declined to provide further details about how the soldier died.
Lieutenant Colonel Charles Bairsto, commander of the 4th Battalion, The Ranger Regiment, described Cpl Gill as a “strong and natural leader” who was “devoted to his family”.
“Cpl Gill’s professionalism and commitment to service inspired those around him and kept him in the highest regard,” he said.
Cpl Gill joined the British Army in 2011.
He was initially deployed to Helmand Province in Afghanistan, where he subsequently trained “specialist partners”.
He also served in Belize, the US, Kenya and Morocco and in 2021 he volunteered for Army Special Operations.
Lt Col Charles Bairsto said Cpl Gill also “quickly volunteered to train Ukrainian soldiers in Britain”.
“His family has lost a loving father, husband and son,” he said.
“His friends and fellow Rangers will miss a much loved and respected leader.
“The Army has lost a professional, skilled and loyal special operations soldier whose contributions to the team made it far stronger than the sum of its parts.”
