Nov. 24—FARGO — State troopers arrested two people on suspicion of driving under the influence in separate afternoon incidents on Interstate 94 this weekend, with one suspect also facing assault and other charges.
In both cases, the drivers were removed from the roadway after other drivers recognized the danger and called police, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said in a news release.
In the first incident on Saturday, November 23 around 1:30 p.m., an officer responded to a report of a vehicle driving recklessly on I-94 eastbound.
The trooper stopped the vehicle approximately four miles east of Medina and identified the driver as Angelo White, 37, of New Town, North Dakota.
White was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. During the arrest, White assaulted the trooper for several minutes until backup help arrived, the patrol said.
A Foster County sheriff’s deputy stopped to help and was also attacked by White, the patrol said. Other Stutsman County troopers and deputies arrived minutes later and White was taken into custody.
White faces misdemeanor and misdemeanor charges, including driving while intoxicated, two counts of simple assault on an officer, resisting arrest, contact with bodily fluids against law enforcement and driving with a suspended license. He is being held in the Stutsman County Jail.
The state trooper suffered minor injuries and is recovering at home, the patrol said.
In an unrelated event Saturday around 2:30 p.m., an officer responded to another report of a reckless vehicle eastbound on I-94, this time about two miles east of Casselton.
The driver was arrested without incident on suspicion of driving under the influence, the patrol said.
