Suspect shot by police in San Mateo after pointing a gun at officers, police say

SAN MATEO – A man who police say was armed with a gun and pointed it at officers is in the hospital after being shot by police in San Mateo early Saturday morning.

Shortly before 3 a.m., police responded to reports of possible gunshots near North San Mateo Drive.

When San Mateo Police Department officers arrived, they made contact with a man walking near Jefferson Court and State Street, who police said pointed a gun at them before running northbound on Jefferson Court on.

Officers stepped out of the line of fire and called for more resources on the scene, then pursued the suspect.

The suspect was briefly lost but was later located by Burlingame Police Department officers near Bayswater Avenue and Myrtle Road, where he was reportedly holding a gun and shouting in the middle of the street.

The police say they tried to de-escalate the situation and gave orders to the suspect, but the suspect did not comply.

An officer then fired a “less lethal rubber projectile at the suspect to induce the suspect to drop his firearm,” police said. But they said it was ineffective.

A San Mateo Police Department officer and a Burlingame Police Department officer fired their weapons around 4 a.m., police said.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was hit and fell to the ground, police said.

When officers were able to approach the suspect, they said they located a loaded handgun, a 45 caliber Glock pistol, in the suspect’s possession.

Police said they administered first aid to the suspect before taking him to hospital where he is in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon.

As part of protocol, the two officers were placed on administrative leave as the officer-involved shooting remains under investigation.
