The Orange County supervisor is sworn in early, filling Andrew Do’s seat

A private swearing-in ceremony will take place Wednesday, with State Senator Janet Nguyen filling the seat vacated by Andrew Do on the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

Do resigned the following October plead guilty in federal court to accepting more than $550,000 in bribes. His misdeeds involved a plan to spend millions of dollars in COVID relief funds to a non-profit organization where his daughter worked, using the money for personal gain.

Newly elected Supervisor Nguyen will be sworn in early for the full term she won in November, defeating Frances Marquez with a vote of 61.24% to 38.76%. She will fill out the remainder of Do’s term, which was set to expire in early January after term limits prevented him from running for re-election.

Nguyen brings experience, having served on the OC Board of Supervisors from 2007 to 2014.

A more public swearing-in ceremony is planned for January. Orange County Executive Don Wagner has led Do’s office since his resignation.

On Tuesday, supervisors agreed to solicit bids to hire an outside auditor to review county contracts from January 2019 through August of this year. “My intention was to review all contracts that the supervisor (Do) had touched,” Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento said.

Internal auditor Aggie Alonso said: “We are looking at a two-year process.”

Do will be sentenced on March 31.
