From training camp until now, the Detroit Red Wings have had quite the carousel in their net. Cam Talbot, Ville Husso, Jack Campbell, Alex Lyon and Sebastian Cossa had to play one big game of goalkeeper musical chairs.
However, injuries crop up and (unfortunately) make some decisions easier.
Late last night, the Red Wings recalled Campbell under emergency circumstances.
Campbell had joined the NHLPA’s Player Assistance Program in early October and returned to the team on November 17. At that point, he was placed on waivers and subsequently reported to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Since he hadn’t played this year, it took a few weeks of practice to get acclimated before playing a game. Last weekend, Campbell made his season debut with the Griffins.
The Griffins lost both games Campbell started before this emergency recall. However, he posted solid numbers, including a 2.55 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.
Yesterday it was announced that Husso will start today’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Talbot and Lyon are injured, but the duo should be back to full health within next week.
Depending on how Husso fares in net tonight, Campbell may not play a game before being sent down. Or maybe he’ll get a chance to face one of his old teams.
Regardless, the Red Wings situation in net is something to keep a close eye on as the season continues.
