Michigan police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a toddler dead after she was apparently put to bed on Sept. 13.
According to a statement from the Michigan State Police, a 2-year-old girl “got out of her bed and walked out of the house” while her parents were doing construction work on the family’s home in Allen Township, a small community about an hour southeast of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Police were called at 8:20 p.m. to a “vehicle versus pedestrian collision” and found the young child in the roadway. The child was taken to a nearby hospital where, according to the statement, “she succumbed to her injuries.”
Officials believe the toddler wandered into the street and a 38-year-old man in a 2012 VW Jetta hit her. They said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors in the crash and did not specify whether the driver will face charges.
The driver’s name has not been released by MSP.
An autopsy will be performed on the child, Jackson Post officials said in a news release. The investigation is ongoing.
