A Portland man is accused of traveling to Seattle with the intent to sexually abuse children

PORTLAND, OR (KOIN) – A Portland man accused of committing sex acts with children appeared in federal court Friday.

According to the Department of JusticeMark David McCool, 56, was arrested Thursday after arriving at a Seattle hotel. According to court documents, he was led to believe he was meeting two children and that he planned to sexually abuse them. However, the 7- and 11-year-olds McCool thought he had spoken to online did not actually exist, authorities said.

According to court documents, McCool responded to a social media ad placed by an undercover law enforcement agent. It was during chats on the Kik Messenger app over a six-week period that McCool was accused of having sexual interests in children and even providing descriptions of past victims and collecting “trophies” from them.

After traveling by train and a rideshare app to meet at a location under the assumption he would sexually abuse two children, McCool was arrested in Seattle, officials said.

“At the time of his arrest, McCool had several items that reflected his sexual interest in abusing children: condoms, baby oil, rope and stuffed animals,” according to a DOJ news release.

McCool is now charged with, among other things, attempted enticement of a minor and traveling with the intent to engage in sexual acts with a minor.
