Adam Brody and Kristen Bell have given the people what they want: an old-fashioned rom-com with a really good kiss.
Netflix’s new series Nobody wants this rocketed to the top of the streaming charts after its release on September 26, and everyone is talking about one scene in particular. The show, which is inspired by the life of creator Erin Foster, is about an agnostic LA podcast host (Bell) who falls in love with a handsome, unconventional rabbi (Brody). The actors spoke to Yahoo Entertainment about their extraordinary chemistry and the pressure of having such a satisfying kiss on screen.
‘We were both, I think, a little shocked when I read it [the] script where we had to kiss, where it said it was going to be ‘the biggest kiss in the world,'” Bell admitted. She and Brody have worked together before (CHiPs, Scream 4, House of lies) and they say their friendship helped their chemistry, rather than making those scenes “weird” as some might think.
“I wouldn’t say it was weird,” Bell told Yahoo about kissing her friend.
“I wouldn’t think it’s weird either,” Brody agreed.
“There was definitely comfort in it because… we had worked together before as love interests. We have plenty of mutual friends and know each other’s spouses,” Bell explained, referring to her and Brody’s partners Dax Shepard and Leighton Meester. “There’s… a level of comfort, right? Because I can tell Adam anything. I know he can say something to me. There is no strange energy between us.”
“Even after you do the first one or do it a few times, you’re in the zone,” Brody concluded. “We didn’t do any sex scenes; that’s another kettle of fish.”
It didn’t take long for the kiss to dominate all corners of the internet. “Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s New Rom-Com Has One of the Best Kiss Scenes I’ve Ever Seen,” read one headline.
Foster was inspired by the characters of Matt Damon and Minnie Driver Goodwill hunting when writing about the world’s greatest kiss. (Nobody wants this is loosely based on her conversion to Judaism for husband Simon Tikhman.)
“When they go on their first date and they’re eating burgers and fries and they have food on their face, and they say, ‘Let’s do the first kiss. Let’s do it now and get it out of the way.’ .’ “I thought it was such a different kind of first kiss, and it was still so romantic, but conversational and real, fun and flirty,” Foster told Entertainment Weekly. “I really wanted to create a moment that gave you those kinds of anticipatory, exciting feelings.”
Judging from social media, the mission was successful, as X seems delighted with the kiss.
This kiss scene between Noah and Joanne was insane. I’ve been thinking about it for a while. Fictional character Adam Brody setting off the green flag is the kind of global healing women everywhere have been waiting for. #nobodywantsitpic.twitter.com/g67soNbURv

I can finally say: NOBODY WANTS THIS to be perfect. A rom-com that is actually romance AND comedy. Adam Brody evolves into a place of warmth that I didn’t think would be possible. A first kiss scene that made me CLEAR!!!!

Apparently the kiss lived up to its hype in real life too. Bell told TVLine that this is the best on-screen kiss she’s ever had.
