Andrei Rublev missed his semi-final match at the Dubai Championships on Friday because he shouted in the face of a line judge.

Alexander Bublik advances to Saturday’s final against Ugo Humbert from France.

Rublev objected to what he said was a missed call on the baseline, which gave the point to Bublik, who led 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-5 in the third and deciding set. .

After the point was scored, Rublev, who is ranked fifth in the ATP rankings, started shouting in the face of the line judge, who did not respond. ATP supervisor Roland Herfel entered the court with a Russian-speaking person who said Rublev was swearing in his native language.

“I spoke to him in English,” Rublev replied.

Rublev was found at fault by referee Miriam Bley and Bublik’s request to continue the match was denied.

“I highly doubt that Andrey said anything crazy,” Bublik said afterwards. “He’s not that kind of guy. But I think that’s the rules. That’s what they did, they just followed procedure. … There’s not much to say. With all due respect, it was a great game and we deserved both to win. The crowd was there and we could have played one of the best games against each other. It’s a shame it ended like this.”

Daria Kasatkina, a fellow Russian and number 12 in the women’s rankings, went to X to disagree with the decision.

As a result of the omission, Rublev, the 2022 tournament champion and 2023 runner-up, will lose ranking points and the $158,944 in prize money earned for reaching the semifinals.
