(CBS Detroit) – The freezing temperatures have combined Metro Detroit all week. For one towing company it was a week ago full
From callers who need help.
“When everyone prepared to get back to work on Wednesday, cars did not work, tires were flat, battery problems,” said Steven Carroll, sleep operator BLK Knights Tow & Recovery.
For tow car operators such as Carroll, they have received dozens of phone calls about car problems this week.
“No start or no power, so something electric or something with their battery,” Carroll told CBS News Detroit.
Carroll’s task is on average around 20 calls per hour. It is double their usual quantity.
“It is life or death when it is extremely cold; if it is extremely hot, you can do your shirt, remove layers, but if it is so cold, the life of people are at stake,” he said.
AAA told CBS News Detroit that the call volume on Thursday was 44% higher than a week earlier. More calls are outside more time outside the home, and that means that you dress accordingly.
“The most important thing is thermal protection in layers. Many people do not realize that staying hydrated in the winter might be more than in the summer,” Carroll said.
As electric vehicles become more popular, AAA researchers discovered that the life of the EV battery can fall by 40% when the temperature drops below 20 degrees.
When asked how often EVs calls that are called in the winter, Carroll said: “This year it is a lot better than last year, it would be a daily thing for us. We would pick up the EV vehicle and go to a charging point. “
