Authentic Greek cuisine shines at Athena in Santa Clara

Guests at Athena in Santa Clara get an authentic taste of the Mediterranean, where traditional Greek dishes and a warm atmosphere reflect owner George Katsoulis’ passion for sharing his heritage with the Bay Area community.

One of the standout offerings is the classic Greek coffee, a signature drink at Athena, but the menu also includes many other beloved Greek creations. Katsoulis, who immigrated to the US at the age of 15, takes pride in offering fresh, traditional dishes.

“We are privileged to take good care of our customers, who have been very loyal and supportive,” he said, noting that community support has been especially critical during the challenges of the pandemic.

A fan favorite is the restaurant’s “freshly baked baklava,” which has become a staple of Athena’s menu. Katsoulis, who hails from the Nemea region of Greece, says the joy of seeing guests satisfied with their meals is his greatest reward.

“Seeing people happy, healthy and honest when I ask them how was your food, etc.,” he says.

The sense of pride Katsoulis feels is evident in his interactions with diners, many of whom are devoted 49ers fans. He often tells them, “You are the real owners of this restaurant,” underscoring his deep connection to the community.

Regular customers testify to the hospitable atmosphere and delicious food. One restaurant, Susi Garcia, said: “We ended up here once by accident. And I think we had such a special experience. That’s why we made it a tradition. It’s a place we come back to again and again. We love the area. The people are friendly and the food is delicious.”

Katsoulis holds both Greece and California close to her heart. He speaks proudly of his dual citizenship, saying, “We love America. But we never forget that we are also Greek. I have two passports. One is American. One is Greek. And I am very proud of both.”

At Athena, guests don’t just enjoy a meal; they experience Greek pride, hospitality and tradition.
