Body of missing 4-year-old in Ormond Beach recovered by dive team, police say

The body of a missing 4-year-old child was recovered Sunday evening by a dive team in Central Park in Ormond Beach, police said.

The Volusia County Dive Team recovered the body of Waylon Childs at 9:02 p.m. At the park near Fleming Avenue, according to Ormond Beach police.

The child had been missing since around noon on Sunday.

The father had taken Waylon and his two siblings to the park when Waylon went missing. According to police, all children were under the age of five.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts are with Waylon’s family during this unimaginable loss,” Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey said in a social media post. “We would like to thank the community and all agencies involved for their support and efforts during this search. The Ormond Beach Police Department remains committed to the family and our community in the coming days.”

The post stated that the Ormond Beach Police Department, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies were working on “a thorough and extensive search.”
