Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will not travel to the summit meeting of the BRICS group of states in Russia due to an injury, media reports said on Sunday.
Lula suffered a cut on his head at home on Saturday, news websites such as G1 and CNN Brasil reported, citing a medical report circulated by the presidential office.
The note said that after examination, doctors advised the 78-year-old to refrain from long-haul flights. However, he can continue with his other activities.
According to the reports, a separate announcement stated that Lula will participate in the summit via video conference.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will host the other heads of state and government in Kazan, the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, from October 22 to 24.
Moscow is hosting the summit of the group led by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), which has now been expanded to include countries such as Iran and the United Arab Emirates, as a global political event.
