PARADISE – A Northern California father was arrested after authorities say he drunkenly fell asleep on top of his 5-month-old baby, resulting in the child’s death.

Daniel Eastman, 25, is charged with manslaughter and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury or death, Paradise police announced Monday.

Shortly before midnight Sunday evening, officers along with Cal Fire and Butte EMS personnel responded to a report of an infant not breathing at a home on Violet Way. Despite life-saving measures, doctors pronounced the baby dead at the scene.

Eastman’s bail was set at $80,000. Paradise police said the Department of Justice was called in to investigate the scene.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the child’s exact cause of death.

Paradise is a city in Butte County, just over 85 miles north of Sacramento.
