A man was killed Sunday night when his car left the road and hit several objects, authorities in South Carolina said.
Damion R. Gantt, a 30-year-old Saluda resident, died in the single-vehicle crash, the Saluda County coroner’s office said.
According to Corporal Lena Butler of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 9:10 p.m.
Gantt was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro northbound on Pencreek Road, Butler said. At the intersection with Dean Road, the Chevy veered off the right side of Pencreek Road and struck a culvert, wire and fence, causing the car to roll over, Butler said.
The Chevy then crashed into two large trees before coming to a rest in the yard of a home, the coroner’s office said.
According to the coroner, Gantt died at the scene.
Butler said Gantt was the only person in the car and no other injuries were reported.
It is not known whether Gantt was wearing a seat belt.
There is no information available about what caused the Chevy to leave the road, but the coroner and highway patrol say they and police are continuing to investigate the wreck.
In addition to these two agencies, the Saluda County Fire Department, Saluda County Emergency Medical Services, Saluda County Sheriff’s Office, and Saluda County Police Department also responded to the scene.
Through Sunday, 597 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least four people will die in Saluda County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
