This weekend, a portion of the inner loop of Interstate 277 will be closed for the Around the Crown 10K, which draws thousands of runners of all levels to the streets of Charlotte.
The 10 km long course includes a section of the highway.
The race begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. According to a traffic alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, highway crews will install traffic controls on the inner loop of I-277 beginning at 3 a.m. that morning. The outer loop will remain open.
Drivers are blocked from the Inner Loop from I-77 North and South, Independence Boulevard and Brookshire Freeway. Smaller interchanges within the Inner Loop are also affected.
Crews will reopen I-277 through the interstate once the last runner leaves the freeway.
“This will last for a few hours, so drivers should not expect to be able to use the Inner Loop before noon,” the NCDOT warning reads.
At the top of the road, along other roads towards the centre, traffic signs will also be placed to warn drivers of the closure.
