China opposes planned US visit by Taiwan vice president

BEIJING (Reuters) – China said on Thursday it firmly opposes any form of official exchange between the United States and Taiwan, and firmly against “sneak visits” by Taiwanese “independence separatists”.

China is urging the US to end official contacts between the US and Taiwan and to stop escalating “substantial” US-Taiwan relations, the State Department said in a statement.

Taiwan’s vice president William Lai stops in New York and San Francisco in the United States on his way to and from Paraguay, which he visits for the inauguration of the new president.
