A suspicious driver who led California Highway Patrol officers through four counties for more than an hour ended the chase in a Mid-City shopping center parking lot, parked his car and surrendered to officers.
The chase began in the city of San Bernardino, then moved to Riverside, and Orange County CHP officers took over the pursuit around 3 p.m. as the driver continued onto the westbound 91 Freeway. The chase moved into Los Angeles County just before 3:30 p.m.
The suspect, driving a silver Mercedes with dark tinted windows, drove at varying speeds, sometimes exceeding 190 km/h.
At one point a PIT manoeuvre was performed, but the driver was able to recover and quickly drive away, reaching speeds of 160 km/h.
According to the CHP, the driver’s wife called police and a pursuit began.
On two separate occasions the driver was seen throwing something out of his window onto the road.
At approximately 3:37 p.m., CHP reported the driver was on the phone with his daughter, who urged him to stop in the Commerce neighborhood.
In the Boyle Heights neighborhood, the driver opened his door while driving on the I-5 Freeway.
Shortly before 4 p.m., the driver exited the 10 Freeway and pulled into a shopping center parking lot in Mid City. He pulled into a parking space and surrendered to officers.
