(CBS DETROIT) – Like Metro Detroit is preparing for a new round of winter weatherroad crews are working to treat roads ahead of expected icy conditions.
This comes less than a week after Michigan State Police reported more than 200 accidents in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties over the Thanksgiving holiday. On Friday, MSP warned motorists of slippery roads when snow showers hit southeast Michigan.
With more snow expected in the area this week, officials are making sure they are prepared.
“The tricky part about that event was that we were predicting light snow, but there were blizzard conditions,” said Craig Bryson of the Road Commission for Oakland County.
Bryson said his office pre-treated roads with liquid brine before and during the event. But, he said, there is only so much they can do.
“It’s like turning a huge ship. You make the plans, point it in the right direction, and when you have to turn it, it’s a very gradual, slow process of turning the big ship so that it gets to where we have to go.’ Bryson said.
Those same crews will prepare roads again in Oakland County during the next round, but drivers should still be vigilant.
“When it’s snowing so hard that you literally can’t see in front of you, there’s not much we can do,” Bryson said. “We can’t push the snow off the road that quickly. And we can’t be in so many places at once.”
