NEW YORK — Crest Hardware is closing its doors in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Friday after more than 60 years.
The family-owned store on Metropolitan Avenue is more than a place to go for basic necessities. It has become a cornerstone of the community, along with the family pets, Frankie the pig and Finlay the parrot.

Current owner Joey Franquinha says his father, Manny, and uncle, Joe, opened the store in 1962 and he remembers running through the aisles as a kid.
He told CBS News New York The owner of the building did not give them a chance to renew their lease and decided to sell the building.
“It’s heartwarming to see how much this store means to so many people, but it’s also heartbreaking to see all the emotions pour out,” said Franquinha.
The 41-year-old says they’re not moving, but he knows the store’s legacy will live on.
“There’s so much magic that lives within those four walls and in that garden, and the idea of trying to recreate that just seemed impossible,” he said.
Crest held a farewell party last weekend to auction off belongings and say goodbye to old neighbors.
“To the frequent visitors to the back counter asking for advice. To the families who have made it a tradition to get your Christmas tree from us. To all the couples who have chosen our garden center as their wedding venue. To those who have partied with us at one of our many events. To the members of Franklin & Finlay’s fan clubs. To all the artists who have filled our aisles with your creativity and vision. To all of our dedicated, hardworking employees over the years. To all of you. You have been the heartbeat of our existence,” reads a message on their website.
