Cruise ship passenger falls overboard

Aug. 13 – Police on the island of Hawaii said they have launched a missing persons investigation after a 59-year-old man fell overboard at sea on a cruise ship early Friday morning.

Video surveillance footage taken aboard the ship showed a person, believed to be Kenneth Schwalbe of California, falling off the ship, according to a press release.

The Coast Guard was notified and a search was launched.

Based on the time of the video footage at 4:18 a.m. in conjunction with the ship’s coordinates, it was determined by the ship’s captain that the ship was approximately 5 miles offshore from Hilo when the incident occurred.

Police said a report came in at 8:40 a.m. on Friday that Schwalbe was last seen at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday

The ship was scheduled to dock in Hilo, where police responded at the Hilo Port.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Division will continue this investigation and are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the police non-emergency line at 808-935-3311.
