U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials recently seized 22,000 counterfeit Pennsylvania license plate stickers en route from Israel to an address in Philadelphia, officials said Thursday.
Agents found the counterfeit decals in two separate shipments: a 10,000-piece package that arrived on November 26 and a 12,000-piece package that arrived on December 9. Agents suspected the stickers were fake and detained the shipments, according to a Customs press release. and Border Protection’s Baltimore Field Office.
Officials in Pennsylvania confirmed the stickers were fake and officers seized the stickers on December 16.
The fake inspection stickers would have been worth more than $1.4 million if they were real, the news release said.
No arrests have been made.
In Pennsylvania, vehicles must pass annual inspections. Car owners who purchase counterfeit inspection stickers carry a fine of up to $500 and possible jail time.
