Dak Prescott missed practice Friday with a right ankle injury, sparking concern among Cowboys fans after the Dallas quarterback spent the offseason wearing a medical boot for his ankle surgery.
He says he is doing fine.
Prescott spoke to reporters after the Cowboys’ season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. He “1,000 percent” plans to return to the field when the Cowboys return to practice on Tuesday.
Prescott’s missed practice on Friday was his first of training camp. In fact, it was his first missed practice of training camp since 2021. He was not scheduled to play in Sunday’s preseason game and is not expected to play until the regular season, regardless of his health.
Prescott initially injured his right ankle in 2020, suffering a dislocated ankle and a compound fracture that required surgery and ended his season. He returned to the lineup in 2021 and has played in all but five of the Cowboys’ regular-season games since then. He finished second in MVP voting last season behind Lamar Jackson before a disappointing performance in a home playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Prescott reportedly suffered a mild foot sprain before footage surfaced of him wearing a hiking boot while vacationing in Mexico in early July. He later posted photos of himself on vacation without the shoe, saying he was wearing the shoe as a precaution as part of a regular maintenance plan since injuring his ankle in 2020.
Friday’s missed practice raised alarm bells that initially went off when he was first spotted with a walking boot. The Cowboys downplayed his missed practice as a “precaution,” a message Prescott reiterated Sunday when he said he would return to practice Tuesday.
Prescott is entering the final season of a four-year, $160 million contract with the Cowboys amid failed talks to work out an extension. Third-string quarterback Trey Lance played and struggled in Sunday’s 13-12 loss to the Rams.
