‘Damsel’ is making its way onto the list of most-watched films ever on Netflix. Fans love it, but will there be a sequel?

Millie Bobby Brown plays a damsel in distress in the Netflix hit Lady, but she doesn’t need a man to save her. After all, it is her prince who put her in danger.

There’s also no saving required when it comes to views for the film. Released on March 8 Lady has consistently appeared in the global top 10 most-watched films, even peaking at an impressive 50.8 million views the week of March 11, easily taking the top spot.

According to the synopsis, in the film, a dutiful lady agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to discover that the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay a centuries-old debt. She is thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon and must rely on her wits and will to survive.

“It undermines what you expect,” Brown told Netflix in a blog post. “You expect the prince to turn around and save her, and… no. Don’t wait for the prince.”

The medieval drama is now on track to enter Netflix’s top 10 most popular films ever and could soon take its place Extractionstarring Chris Hemsworth, which is currently in 10th place.

What has fans so excited about the film? Could this spark the return of Brown’s heroine for a Lady 2?

Bayford found an offer he couldn’t refuse and made a deal with Queen Isabelle of Aurea (Robin Wright).

This deal would arrange a marriage to Elodie and the Queen’s son, Prince Henry. In return, Bayford would receive a large amount of gold and resources needed to save his country. But the family would have to cut all ties with Elodie and, in an alarming twist, she would be sacrificed to a dragon – a deal the Aurea royal family made with the beast to keep it at bay.

It begins its fifth week in the top 10 (April 1-7), Lady had been viewed 120.8 million times, up from 115.9 million the previous week. The film only needed 15 million views to catch up Extraction at that time, so the next few weeks will be crucial.

What resonates with the audience

Reviews for the film have been mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics relented Lady a score of 56%, while the audience had a slightly higher score of 61%.

Viewers on social media have shared what they liked most about the film: Millie Bobby Brown’s solid performance, a clever plot twist and, last but not least, the fire-breathing dragon.

Brown’s career started on Netflix as Eleven Stranger things, one of the most watched shows on the platform. The British actress starred and produced Enola Holmes And Enola Holmes2both popular original films. Lady has continued its run of strong performances with the streaming giant.

“I couldn’t draw anything from it, because I’ve personally never read a story like that Lady,” Brown told Netflix. “With Eleven I can draw on Crazy Max. Or, with Enola Holmes, I can tap into a bit of Hermione Harry Potter. I couldn’t find anyone for Elodie so I knew I had to create her.”

How does the budget compare to the rest of the top 10?

With a reported budget of $60 million, Lady would fall somewhere in the middle when it comes to the budgets of the top 10 films.
