The end of every season brings changes, but some changes are more important than others and the Lions are about to make some big departures in the near future.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have been interviewed for head coaching jobs during the team’s bye week to open the postseason and are both seen as good prospects to move on to new clubs. During a press conference on Monday, head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged that reality.
“I expected to lose them both, but I wasn’t told,” Campbell said. “I have a feeling, but I’m willing to lose both.”
Campbell said it will “absolutely” hurt the team to lose Johnson and Glenn and that he will be “forever grateful” for their contributions, but that the Lions “cannot allow” those changes to derail what they have achieved in recent built up time. few years. Campbell said he is confident he will “find the next best guys for us.”
“We have guys on staff who are more than qualified to be excellent in those roles, but that doesn’t mean I’m not looking outward as well,” Campbell said. “I want what I think will be as close as possible to what we have been. We don’t lose what we stand for and our identity. We stay true to who we are.”
Campbell said he won’t be in a “mad rush” to install new coordinators and said quarterback Jared Goff will have input into the offensive side’s picks to ensure there is minimal turmoil for a team that still believes the championship window is wide open.
