Detroit nonprofit is making progress on building an affordable housing complex

(CBS DETROIT) – A nonprofit housing association is making significant progress on construction of an affordable housing complex at Orchard Street and Lahser Road in Detroit’s Old Redford neighborhood.

Blight Busters Ground was broken for the project for the first time in October 2023. The complex is expected to house 48 two-bedroom apartments. John George is the group’s executive director. He says rent is based on income, starting around $500 per month.

“Our children are important, and they should grow up in and around clean and decent neighborhoods,” George said. “So if we can work together to create affordable housing, that’s the right thing to do.”

The city of Detroit has been in the national spotlight lately, with many calling it “a city on the rise.” It is also a city with many new luxury high-rise apartments and condos. While the new downtown complexes are beautiful, George says his focus is on helping Detroit housing residents who can’t afford that kind of luxury living.

“Affordable housing is super important, especially for our low- and middle-income families,” he said.

Because of its importance, George wanted to do something to make it more accessible in his neighborhood. That’s why he asked lawmakers for additional funding.

“We went to see our friends in Lansing,” he said. “They were able to put an additional million dollars on the table. It’s a $15 million investment in the community, and that million dollars has brought down rental costs.”

Right now, the city of Detroit has a seven-point plan with a price tag of $203 million to address affordable housing throughout the city and ensure every Detroiter has a place to call home. George and his team at Blight Busters are helping with this, something he believes will also create opportunities in the area.

“It will bring dollars and value into the community,” George said. “With this kind of investment, it will increase property values for the homeowners in the area, it will help the small businesses, and it will really create opportunity and hope, and we’re very excited about it.”
