Detroit woman accused of hoarding gets help cleaning up

CENTERLINE, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – A Centerline woman who received dozens of complaints about trash piling up on her property is getting help from a company and volunteers.

“It’s clear that this didn’t happen overnight and it wasn’t resolved overnight,” said Elizabeth Alexander, the owner of the property the complaints are about.

Alexander says she understands why her neighbors are unhappy and is committed to cleaning up the mess.

“I was out here until 2am, I was so exhausted I had to sit down for a while,” Alexander said.

Social media is abuzz with Alexander’s concerns on Sterling St. in Centerline. There have been hundreds of complaints and the city of Centerline has said they are aware of the concerns and have taken action.

“We took the appropriate steps to ensure due process and issued fines to the homeowner for picking up the trash and debris in the yard,” said Centerline City Manager Dennis Champine.

Alexander apologized to her neighbors and said she was very ashamed that her property could have ended up in this situation.

“I feel so bad for my neighbors, my friends and family. I’m so sorry; it may not mean much, but it’s sincere,” Alexander said.

Alexander said she is determined to clean up the yard, but she needs some help.

Motor City Dumpster reached out to CBS Detroit after hearing about Alexander’s story and decided to donate a 20 cubic yard dumpster to help her clean up the mess.

Shortly after Motor City delivered the container, Champine happened to stop by to talk to Alexander. He was happy to hear that the company had helped him.

“Every time we see companies helping people, especially people in these kinds of situations, it makes me happy. This is an exceptional donation,” said Champine.

Champine said there is a hearing on Sept. 4 to address the ongoing violations on Alexander’s property. He still hopes the property can be cleaned up before that date.

Alexander was also grateful for the generosity of Motor City Dumpsters. She said volunteers from her church, Harvest Time Outreach Ministries, are also helping with the cleanup.
