Educators are considering closing school next week due to possible frigid temperatures in Southeast Michigan

(CBS DETROIT) – We will all have to deal with the bitterly cold weather next week, and it may get too cold outside, forcing schools to close.

“When our wind chill – that’s the actual temperature and the wind chill is between -20 and -25 degrees – we know that frostbite can occur in a very short period of time,” said Kelly Coffin, the Farmington Public Schools superintendent. “We are obviously most concerned about the safety of our families who have to wait for buses, and so we really have to pay attention to that.”

With temperatures expected to dip into the single digits, sometimes even below zero next week, with bitterly cold winds across Southeast Michigan, superintendents like Coffin are already discussing no class Tuesday.

“Frostbite starts between 15 and 30 minutes when it is that cold and so you may not even be aware of it. Of course it feels cold, but you are not aware of the intense cold and what that does to us very quickly when we’re outside,” Kist said.

This weekend, Coffin and all other superintendents in Oakland County will continue to contact meteorologists, monitor the mechanical systems in the schools and ensure buses can start in these frigid conditions.

DTE Energy says they are prepared for this cold and everyone, whether in school or not, should take the proper precautions.

“It’s important to minimize the time you spend outside and stay indoors as much as possible. We also encourage you to check on some of your friends, neighbors and elderly people and make sure your pets are cared for too” , said Henry Decker, vice president of gas sales and delivery at DTE.
