“Everyone started running;” UD students describe what they saw that led to the police presence

There were several police officers on the campus of the University of Dayton late Sunday night.

The police were in riot gear and officers were firing pepperballs, our news crew from News Center 7 saw Sunday evening.

UD Public Safety officers and the Dayton Police Department were dispatched to the Kiefaber Street and Lawnview Avenue area.

According to scanner traffic, officers issued a ‘Signal 99’ on Sunday evening around 11:30 pm for a request for police assistance.

Taylor Robertson of News Center 7 reports that UD students held a block party, which the university is known for. Via social media, they choose a street where they all come to party together.

“So we were just having a fun Labor Day weekend and something happened,” says Charlie, a UD student. “A scuffle took place, a group of people started running and the police stopped.”

One student said he saw everyone running in the street.

“I was in front of everyone I knew and pulled them into a house because everyone said someone pulled a gun and ran all over the street,” said Gary Hoeft. “It has cleared the street.”

Our News Center 7 crew was on the scene as Dayton police cleared the street and fired pepperballs into the crowd.

Hoeft said these block parties often take place on campus.

“It’s common when we have block parties and stuff,” he told News Center 7. “It’s like you’re just trying to hang out with your friends that you know here, and then the people who live around here but don’t do that. go there, come in, and things like that happen.

He said fights broke out and everyone was recording it on their phones.

“I started seeing people pull away like boxing gloves and they were fighting,” Hoeft told News Center 7. “So there were people standing in a circle, everyone was recording, and I was at someone’s house. I just looked down from someone’s porch and people were boxing, and the next thing we knew everyone was running.

Our news crew saw a man being taken away in handcuffs.

“I have lawyers!” he yelled as officers led him away.

Montgomery County Regional Dispatch told News Center 7 early Monday morning that they were responding to a major disruption at the University of Dayton.

We’ve reached out to UD, Dayton Police, and UD Public Safety for more information to see if anyone has been charged or if any injuries have been reported.
