Menomonie, Wis. – A dark day for turkey day. In this part of western Wisconsin, “dark” is an understatement.

A narrow band of snow soon fell four inches on drivers, causing a semi to slide into a ditch.

The National Weather Service says this is likely due to a glass manufacturing company near Menomonie.

“That steam rises into the cloud cover above it, and the steam acts as tiny particles that the water droplets can attach to and create snow crystals,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Caleb Grunzke. “Everything came together perfectly because of several inches of snow and major traffic issues.”

The Wisconsin State Patrol reported 16 crashes in a five-hour span, including a six-car pileup.

“We were driving in and out of the snow quite dramatically,” said Dave Erickson, who made the trip back to the Twin Cities from Milwaukee.
