Florida police say they shot and killed an armed woman who ‘ambushed’ them in the park

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Police at a Florida park have shot and killed an armed woman who “ambushed” them as they searched for a suspect in a drug investigation, officials said.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. Thursday at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee. Police responded to the park after receiving a report that the person they were looking for, a man, had been seen there, according to a department press release Friday.

Officers and a deputy from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office were at the park when the woman “ambushed law enforcement officers and opened fire on them,” the department said. The officers and deputy returned fire and she was hit. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

No police officers were injured and there is no threat to public safety, the press release said.

A police spokesman said the suspect in the drug investigation was taken into custody at the park, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. It was not immediately clear whether there was a connection between the man and the woman.
