Staal, 37, spent his final season in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers. In 35 games with the Flyers last season, the 6-foot-4 defenseman had one goal, five points, 31 hits and a plus-2 rating. Overall, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native proved to be a solid depth defenseman and leader for the rebuilding Flyers.
Staal was one of the most high-profile free agents still on the market, but he has now decided to leave his playing career behind and join the Rangers’ staff. The fit should be a good one for Staal, as he spent the first 13 years of his NHL career with the Blueshirts.
In 1,136 games over 17 NHL seasons, split between the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Flyers, Staal had 53 goals, 234 points and a plus-52 rating.
