Former Spanish football boss Luis Rubiales arrested and released by authorities in Madrid

Disgraced former Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales was arrested after arriving in Madrid following an international flight and released after questioning, Spain’s Guardia Civil said.

A Civil Guard spokesperson confirmed to CNN that Rubiales was detained this morning after landing at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport on a commercial flight from the Dominican Republic.

He was detained on the runway by the Guardia Civil’s Central Operative Unit (UCO) before being driven away in a van.

The UCO is a body of the Spanish Guardia Civil that investigates and combats serious and organized crime in Spain.

Rubiales was released after testifying at the airport’s Terminal 4 Civil Guard unit, the Civil Guard said. He is now waiting for the summons to appear in court.

CNN has reached out to Rubiales’ lawyers for comment.

In March, Spanish prosecutors demanded a prison sentence of two years and six months for Rubiales’ unwanted kiss to striker Jennifer Hermoso after Spain’s World Cup victory.

However, multiple media reports suggest that his detention is part of an ongoing corruption investigation related to his tenure as RFEF president.

The Guardia Civil spokesman confirmed to CNN that Rubiales was being held and interrogated for an investigation other than the one led by the Spanish National Court for the illicit kiss to Hermoso, but declined to comment further due to a court ruling.
