BOSTON – Within 24 hours of the polling stations are closing across the countryboth Donald Trump and Kamala Harris called for unity. But is that possible in a political climate as divisive as this?

“Do you want to talk about it?”

Ben and Alex are two guys from Boston who decided to do something about their post-election slump.

“My friend came up with the wording himself, but it just says, ‘Do you want to talk about it?’” Ben said.

They grabbed two pairs of chairs, made two signs and set out along the pond in the Jamacia Plain. For the next four hours they sat and listened.

“It was really powerful,” Ben said. “I think it explains why we’ve come here. People are so alienated these days and part of the reason we’ve become so divided and so much anger and hatred is that so many people feel unseen, unheard, alone and scared. “

Ben and Alex heard from nearly three dozen people on Wednesday. There was a line at some points.

They heard from supporters of Trump and Harris who wanted to express their opinions about the election. There was common ground to be found. Both men said people from across the political spectrum wanted to be heard and validated. And it seems everyone is looking for a way forward.

“A sense of peace”

“Right now I feel a sense of peace,” Alex Kelly said. “People have an opportunity, if they are willing, to reach out to each other to connect.”

Ben and Alex said they plan to return to their spot at the Jamaica Pond Boathouse for another listening session Friday afternoon.
