Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned from the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson announced, the same day Donald Trump announced he had tapped the Florida firebrand as his attorney general.
Republican senators have already expressed doubts that Gaetz could be confirmed to that powerful Cabinet spot, as the choice faces fierce opposition within the party.
The dismissal is effective immediately, Johnson said.
