Georgia quarterback Carson Beck suffered an elbow injury during the SEC Conference championship against Texas on Saturday and is exploring treatment options, the school confirmed in a news release Monday.
Georgia said the timeline for Beck’s return is unclear and has not clarified whether he will miss the postseason. But according to multiple reports, Beck suffered an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), putting his postseason in jeopardy.
Unfortunately, the bad news keeps coming for the Bulldogs: In the same post, the school announced that punter Brett Thorson’s season is over, with the junior suffering a knee injury to his non-kicking leg during Saturday’s game. Thorson will require season-ending surgery due to the injury, according to the school.
Georgia will play in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 and enter the college football playoff quarterfinals as a runner-up. The Bulldogs will play the winner of Notre Dame-Indiana.
Beck suffered the injury after being fired during the first half of the SEC Championship and replaced by backup Gunner Stockton. But Beck returned to the field in overtime after Stockton’s helmet was knocked off – forcing him to play – and handed the ball to Trevor Etienne for the winning touchdown.
Whether or not Georgia will play its senior quarterback will depend on what move Beck decides to make next. According to multiple reports, Beck may try to rest his elbow over the next few weeks and see how much it heals before the game. If the chances of him returning this season are slim, he may decide to undergo surgery and prepare for the NFL Draft.
Beck became Georgia’s starter last season, starting all thirteen regular season games and helping the Bulldogs demolish Florida State in the 2023 Orange Bowl. This season, he threw for a career-high 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns, leading Georgia to a record of 11-2 and second place overall.
