German president hands medical help for Gaza during Jordan’s visit

The German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier handed over 1.8 tonnes of medical supplies for the inhabitants of Gaza on Tuesday when he visited Jordan during the second stop of his journey in the Middle East.

The Steinmeier office said the equipment fans included newborn babies, hospital beds, antibiotics, anticoagulants and painkillers.

The supplies were given to the Jordanian Health Service, which urgently needs them for his two field hospitals in the Gaza Strip.

“Together with Jordan we try to make a joint contribution to at least alleviate the endless suffering of the people in Gaza,” said Steinmeier visiting the Al-Azraq Air Base.

Germany plans to deliver a total of approximately 18 tonnes of medical supplies with a value of € 1.5 million ($ 1.6 million).

The help is urgently needed, especially after Israel promised to ban the UN agency for Palestinian aid, the relief and works agency of the United Nations for Palestinian refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

“I hope the Israeli decision about UNRWA is not final,” said Steinmeier. “We have to look for alternatives to help the population.”

About 150 German troops are stationed at the Al-Azraq Air Base, east of Amman.

Together with a similar number of troops in Erbil in North Iraq, the German troops are working on the international commitment to combat the Islamic State and to stabilize Iraq.

The German Air Force offers air transport capacity, supports coalition operations with tank aircraft and is involved in monitoring airspace and seas. German troops also help in training and advising Iraqi troops.

“I am very grateful for the good cooperation between the soldiers of the German Bundeswehr and the Jordanian army,” said Steinmeier as he sat down for a meal with German troops.

Steinmeier will have conversations on Wednesday with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman to discuss the situation in the region. In recent years, Jordan has taken over hundreds of thousands of refugees from his northern neighbor Syria.
