After the fall of leader Bashar al-Assad in Syria, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has promised to help rebuild the country.
“Europe will also help with the reconstruction,” Scholz said in a video on X.
After suffering years of civil war, Syrians deserve a life of freedom and security, the chancellor argued.
The country’s new rulers must ensure this, Scholz said. “We will work with them on this basis.”
Some Syrian refugees in Germany hope to return to their homeland soon, Scholz added. “We will also support this as soon as the situation allows,” he said.
However, Syrians who are well integrated into Germany will continue to be welcome in the country, Scholz said.
