The 97 km Tema-Mpakadan railway line in Ghana has been officially inaugurated.
This rail link connects the industrial city of Tema with Mpakadan in the eastern region. It is claimed to be the first standard gauge railway in the country.
The development, inaugurated by Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to strengthen the country’s transportation and trade logistics.
It is an important part of the multi-modal transport network that aims to improve connectivity between the Port of Tema and the northern regions of Ghana.
The project will help improve the efficiency of port operations and minimize traffic congestion on major roads. It will also reduce transportation costs and strengthen the competitiveness of Ghana’s ports.
Construction of the railway project began in 2018 and was completed with a $447 million credit facility from India Exim Bank and executed by Afcons Infrastructure.
Italy-based Team Engineering oversaw the project, which included the construction of tracks, bridges, stations and support facilities.
President Akufo-Addo said: “Railways are recognized worldwide as the most efficient means of transporting bulk goods and large numbers of people. They are a linchpin in reducing the cost of doing business and promoting regional integration.”
He emphasized the government’s commitment to develop more than 4,500 km of railway line across Ghana as part of a broader strategy to improve the socio-economic condition of the country.
The railway is expected to support agricultural and trade activities by facilitating the movement of goods such as fuel, cement and agricultural products.
This will not only benefit the domestic market but also extend to neighboring landlocked countries, improving regional trade dynamics.
The project is part of the first phase of the Ghana-Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project, which will ultimately connect the Port of Tema to Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso.
“Ghana inaugurates the Tema-Mpakadan Railway” was originally created and published by Railway Technology, a brand owned by GlobalData.
