Goldman Sachs and Macquarie top financial M&A advisors in the metals and mining sector in 2024

Goldman Sachs and Macquarie have emerged as the top financial advisors for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the metals and mining sectors for 2024, in terms of value and volume respectively, according to the latest rankings from data and analytics firm GlobalData.

An analysis of GlobalData’s Deals Database shows that Goldman Sachs took the top spot by value, advising on deals worth $13.3 billion. Macquarie, on the other hand, led in terms of volume, advising on a total of eleven transactions.

GlobalData principal analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Many of the top ten advisors by value have experienced massive double-digit declines in the total value of the deals they advised in 2024 compared to 2023. Goldman Sachs even recorded a year-on-year decline. of 46.9% in value, but still managed to occupy first place.

“Three of the five deals Goldman Sachs advised during the year were multibillion-dollar deals and these helped the firm secure the top spot by value. It’s also notable that the average value of these three deals was over $4 billion.

“In contrast, most of the top ten advisors by volume recorded growth in the number of deals they advised in 2024 compared to 2023. Macquarie also recorded growth and an improvement in its ranking. It occupied the fifth position by volume in 2023 and topped the chart in 2024.”

BMO Capital Markets ranks second by value, advising on deals worth $12.3 billion, closely followed by JP Morgan with $12.2 billion, Gordon Dyal & Co. Advisory Group with $10.4 billion and Bank of America with $10.2 billion.

In terms of deal volume, BMO Capital Markets also ranked second with ten transactions, along with Royal Bank of Canada, while Cormark Securities advised on eight deals and Moelis & Company seven.

GlobalData’s rankings are based on real-time tracking of thousands of corporate websites, consulting firm websites, and other trusted sources available on the secondary domain. A dedicated team of analysts monitor all these sources to gather in-depth details for each deal, including the names of advisors.
