Goretzka shines as Bayern extends Bundesliga lead to seven points with victory over Wolfsburg

BERLIN (AP) — Leon Goretzka scored twice for Bayern Munich as it beat Wolfsburg 3-2 to open a seven-point lead in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen could restore their four-point lead with a late-game home win against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Goretzka fell out of favor at Bayern last season but reminded club bosses of his qualities by scoring twice for the first time since March.

Bayern started well when Leroy Sane hit the crossbar, before Harry Kane forced a save from Kamil Grabara in the Wolfsburg goal.

But it took Goretzka to open the scoring in the 20th, after charging through the center of the pitch before firing inside the far post. Goretzka’s second goal in the 62nd – after Michael Olise’s goal in the 39th – proved to be the winner after Mohammed Amoura scored twice for Wolfsburg.

Leipzig squandered a three-goal lead over last-place Bochum when Myron Boadu scored a hat-trick for the home side in the second half.

Stuttgart capitalized with a 4-0 defeat of Freiburg to overtake Leipzig and move into fourth place, the last place for Champions League qualification. Leipzig left Stuttgart one point behind in fifth place.

St. Pauli also defeated relegation rival Heidenheim 2-0, and Hoffenheim won 3-1 in Holstein Kiel.
