Grass fire ignites near Stanley

November 24 – A grass fire started near Stanley on Sunday afternoon, but was contained within three hours by the Santa Fe County Fire Department.

No residents or firefighters were injured in the fire and the fire caused no damage to any buildings.

Around 1 p.m. Sunday, the Santa Fe County Fire Department was dispatched to the fire at NM 41 near B Anaya Road and Jaymar Road, county spokeswoman Olivia Romo wrote in an email to The New Mexican.

The provincial fire brigade “coordinated [a] multi-agency response,” Romo wrote, with support from the Torrance County Fire Department and volunteer fire districts of Stanley, Eldorado and Moriarty.

The team contained the fire around 3:30 PM after it destroyed several hundred hectares.

Romo said the cause of the fire remains unknown, but the fire has been referred to the New Mexico State Forestry Division for additional monitoring and cleanup efforts.
