The deputy leader of the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement has portrayed the ceasefire agreement with Israel in the Gaza Strip as a triumph over Israel.

Khalil al-Hayya, deputy head of Hamas’s Political Bureau, said after the deal was announced that it represented a “historic moment.”

“Our people have thwarted the declared and hidden goals of the occupation. Today we prove that the occupation will never defeat our people and their resistance,” al-Hayya added.

He described the massacres of Israelis on October 7, 2023 as a turning point in the history of the Palestinian cause and stated that Israel had been affected to the core.

Hamas will continue to be guided by the goal of wresting Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa Mosque from Israel, al-Hayya said.
