Here’s How Michigan Schools Rank on the U.S. News Best Colleges List

(CBS DETROIT) – US News & World Report released its list of the best colleges and universities in the US for 2025. Two universities from Michigan are in the top 100.

The list ranked nearly 1,500 four-year, bachelor’s degree-granting institutions in the U.S. using 17 ranking factors. The ranking criteria included factors such as graduation rates, freshman retention rates, standardized testing, student-faculty ratios and more.

One of the main categories for the rankings is the national university category, but 13 key factors were also used to rank the schools in terms of best liberal arts colleges, best regional universities, and best regional colleges.

Princeton, MIT, Harvard, Stanford and Yale topped the list, but these are the Michigan universities that made the top 100.

University of Michigan

The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor is ranked #21 on the list of best national universities. The university was founded in 1817. The tuition and fees for in-state students are $18,848, and the tuition and fees for out-of-state students are $63,081. The number of undergraduate students is 33,730 and the acceptance rate is 18%.

According to the 2025 rankings, the University of Michigan was ranked No. 3 in the Best Public Schools category and No. 59 in the Best Value category.

University of Michigan

Michigan State University, located in East Lansing, is ranked #63. Founded in 1855, the university has a tuition and fees of $18,826 for in-state students, a tuition and fees of $45,178 for out-of-state students, and a enrollment of 40,483 for undergraduate programs. The university has an acceptance rate of 84%.

The school also ranks #30 in the Best Public Schools category and #165 in the Best Value for Money category.

In addition to these two universities that made the top 100, these Michigan schools also made the list:

  • Michigan Technological University (#148)
  • Wayne State University (No. 179)
  • University of Detroit Mercy (No. 189)
  • Grand Valley State University (No. 244)
  • Central Michigan University (#259)
  • Andrews University (No. 273)
