PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Philadelphia school district will lay off a number of students Tuesday and Wednesday early because of the heat wave that hits the region this week.

The 70 schools that will close early have no air conditioning or the buildings have inadequate cooling systems. Classes end three hours early.

CBS Philadelphia is still waiting to see what the PSD will decide on Thursday and Friday at the end of the week.

Delaware County

  • The Upper Darby School District is also on the train for early dismissal. According to the USDD superintendent, students leave early Tuesday through Thursday.
  • The William Penn School District has a half day for students from Wednesday through Friday due to the extreme heat. Wednesday is the district’s first day of school.

Buck’s County

  • Quakertown Elementary in Bucks County will also receive an early layoff tomorrow and virtual learning on Wednesday and Thursday due to the heat wave.

Montgomery County

  • Keith Valley Middle School in the Hatboro-Horsham School District will have an early discharge on Tuesday, September 5 and Wednesday, September 6 at 1 p.m.
  • Cheltenham High School closes at 11.45am on Tuesday due to no air conditioning
