The Shiite Lebanese militia Hezbollah will on Saturday commemorate slain leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed on September 27 by an Israeli attack on the militia’s headquarters.
The event will take place in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of the Iran-backed group.
The ceremony, titled Light from Light, has been announced at 5:45 pm local time (1545 GMT). Hezbollah supporters are expected to gather at the Holy Martyrdom Site – the former site of the organization’s headquarters in the Haret Hreik district, which already appears to have become something of a shrine. In Shia Islam the theme of martyrdom plays a central role.
Following the escalation of conflict with Hezbollah, Israel carried out numerous airstrikes on the Shiite militia’s stronghold in the south of the Lebanese capital. Just a few days ago, both sides agreed on a ceasefire.
