We shall go on Red alert There will be periods of moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday morning.

The rain will fall around lunchtime on Wednesday and spread from south to north. Afterwards, rounds of moderate to heavy rain are expected, mainly in the city, Long Island, the Jersey coast and southwestern Connecticut. Local flooding will be an issue during the afternoon rush hour, so commuters should take this into account.

New Jersey is considered to have a marginal flood risk – less than 10% – for Wednesday. For most of Long Island and Connecticut, the risk rises to low: about 20%.

Rains should ease overnight, but additional rainfall will only slow the recovery process in flooded areas.

All told, the worst affected areas can see as far as 2 to 3 centimeters.

If you’re thinking we’ve had a lot of rain so far this year, you’re right. We’re off to a wet start to 2024, with 9 inches of rain through Tuesday, which is more than an inch above normal.

And as if enough rain hasn’t fallen already, we’re in for another round of potentially significant rainfall this weekend. All the recent rain will leave the ground saturated, so we will monitor those conditions closely.
